Treats SVT
Vagal maneuver is often used first (to help resolve SVT) before this medication is given
Typical dose for SVT: 6 mg over 1-3 seconds. If the SVT does not resolve (within 1-2 minutes), a second dose is usually administer at a 12 mg dose. However, a 3 mg dose is sometimes used in patients taking certain medications (example: carbamazepine)(1)
Can sometimes be used during a stress test as well
Rapid IV push: Has a short half life. Must be pushed rapidly so that it is effective
Chest pain, flushing, feelings of impending doom, dizziness, nausea can develop after the IV push
Elderly are more likely to experience adverse effects
Slows cardiac electrical conduction and helps restore normal sinus rhythm
Can cause temporary asystole- but usually only briefly
