  • The clot blocks blood flow to the lungs

    • fat from the marrow of a broken bone (usually long bones)

  • Clotting disorders: Factor V Leiden mutation
  • Recent surgery (last 2 months)
  • History PE/DVT

  • Cigarette smoking (weaker risk factor)
