The extremity that has the femoral puncture site should be kept straight. Bed rest can last between 4-12 hours depending on the hospital, surgeon, patient, and or policies. Some hospitals/surgeons prefer the patient to remain completely flat for a specific amount of time (ex: 2 hours) and then no more than 30 degrees elevation after that. This is a generalization. Bed rest helps prevent bleeding & helps the artery to heal. This reduces the risk for a hematoma as well.
