Acute Bronchitis

  • FACTS

    • Usually viral in most cases

    • Cough usually last >2 weeks

  • SYMPTOMS

    • Cough worse in night

    • Wheezing common

    • Low grade fever

    • Productive cough

  • TESTS: (to consider)

    • Chest Xray

    • Pulmonary function test

    • CBC

    • CT chest

  • TREATMENT (for cough <4 weeks):

    • Cough: Antitussives like dextromethorphan

    • Congestion: Expectorant like guaifenesin

    • Wheezing: Albuterol inhaler,

    • Antibiotics: it is generally recommended against taking antibiotics for acute uncomplicated bronchitis. Although there are certain circumstances where an antibiotic may likely be needed.

  • DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS:

    • Asthma exacerbation

    • Pneumonia

    • Coronavirus

    • Lung cancer

    • Pertussis

    • Bronchospasm

    • Congestive heart failure
