CLASS MEDICATION: Calcium Channel Blocker
INDICATION: Typically given for atrial fibrillation RVR (rapid ventricular rate)
FAST FACT: A bolus is usually administered first before the continuous infusion.
FAST FACT: Heart rate & blood pressure can drop. Monitor this closely- the drip may have to be stopped
FAST FACT: It dilates arteries which = Lower blood pressure
FAST FACT: Patient may have to be moved to ICU to be on this drip (depends on the hospital). However, sometime hospitals just have patient moved to a telemetry floor.
FAST FACT: Should have continuous tele monitoring
FAST FACT: Should not be used in patient who have sick sinus syndrome, hypotension, pulmonary congestion, 2nd or 3rd degree AV Block, acute CHF, acute MI, SBP <90 mmHg
FAST FACT: Check the patient’s medication list first before starting Diltiazem IV drip. If patient is on a beta blocker this may increase the risk for severe bradycardia and or hypotension
