Fibromyalgia is a common  condition that is often misunderstood. Here are some basic information about this condition:

  • Involves widespread areas of musculoskeletal pain that last for at least 3 months

 

  • Diagnosis: Based on patient’s subjective complaints and ruling out other conditions

 

  • Multiple symptoms:
    • Fatigue
    • Muscle pain
    • Sleep problems
    • Brain fog (‘fibro fog”)
    • Depression
    • Anxiety
    • Headaches
    • Paresthesias
    • IBS
    • Urinary frequency

 

  • Typically labs studies are normal- the diagnostic test for fibromyalgia

 

  • Differential diagnosis include (but not limited to):
    • Lupus
    • Rheumatoid arthritis
    • Chronic fatigue syndrome
    • Osteoarthritis
    • Thyroid disorders
    • Vitamin D deficiency

 

  • Tests to consider:
    • SED rate/CRP
    • Thyroid function tests
    • Rheumatoid factor
    • CBC
    • ANA
    • Vitamin D

 

  • Types of Treatment Medications:
    • Amitriptyline
    • Cyclobenzaprine
    • Duloxetine
    • Pregabalin
    • Gabapentin
    • Tramadol
    • Naproxen
