TYPICAL DAILY DOSE: 20 mg daily, 40 mg daily

#1. Can cause depletion in electrolytes, specifically potassium. A supplement is often prescribed while on this medication
#2. It can potentially cause a decline in renal function, especially with higher doses
#3. It is most commonly given for heart failure
#4. Patients who take this medication for heart failure should report a weight gain of 2-3 lbs + in a day or 5 lbs in a week. Their dosage may need to be adjusted. The patient might also need education on fluid intake and possibly a fluid restriction (depending on the severity of their heart failure).
#5. Elderly are particularly prone to side effects such as hypotension (low blood pressure) and electrolyte disturbances. Should watch for dizziness, fatigue, weakness, and muscle cramps
#6. Should not be taken right before bedtime, as this may keep the patient up throughout the night (urinating). Best to take in the am.
