  • A normal magnesium is 1.5-2.5 mEq/L. (this level varies from place to place but this is the average).

  • Magnesium helps maintain the body’s heart & nervous system.

  • With low magnesium the patient often has low calcium especially if the magnesium is <1.

  • One would typically see decreased reflexes with low magnesium rather than increased

  • Can also cause sleepiness, muscle cramps, nausea. Also may see widened QRS and peak T waves

  • NCLEX/NURSING STUDENT TIP: Know lab values-have an idea of the normals
